Driving long distances to and from treatment only makes matters worse for your patients. That's why Clark Regional Medical Center and UK HealthCare have teamed up to bring high-quality cancer care to Winchester and surrounding communities.
At Central Kentucky Cancer Care, we take a comprehensive approach to oncology services – treating the whole patient, and not just the cancer. Our care team determines the best options for each patient and ensures that treatments are coordinated and sequenced in a way that offers optimal quality of life.
Medical Oncology
CKCC medical oncology and hematology services treat cancer and blood disorders through injection and infusion therapy, using traditional chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy.
Chemotherapy is considered a systemic treatment and works to stop the growth of cancer cells. Immunotherapy helps the immune system identify cancer cells to attack and kill them. Both chemotherapy and immunotherapy may be used alone or together. They may also be used with other treatments such as surgery or radiation therapy. Each treatment is tailored to the specific needs of the patient to provide the best possible outcomes. Infusion suites are semi-private, with comfortable chairs and televisions for patients and their families.
Radiation Oncology
The radiation oncology program, under the supervision of the radiation oncologist, at CKCC offers a number of state-of-the-art therapies for cancer treatment including:
Computed Tomography (CT): used to create detailed cross-sectional images of a patient
Linear Accelerator (LINAC): used for external beam radiation treatments targeted to destroy cancer cells
Full spectrum radiotherapy including:
These therapies offer several benefits to physicians and patients alike including the ability for physicians to see tumors in real-time and more precise positioning of the patient’s body for accurate treatment planning. For patients, targeting radiation treatments with pinpoint precision decreases the need for additional incisions or surgery, minimizes the exposure of radiation to nearby healthy tissue and organs, and offers faster recovery after treatment.
Our radiology team also includes two-full time specialists from UK Medical Center: a medical dosimetrist, who will work with the oncology team to create a plan to deliver the prescribed dose of radiation to patients; and a medical physicist, who helps to design patient treatment plans for high-precision treatments by using physics to model and measure how radiation interacts with tissues in the body.
Additional Services
Central Kentucky Cancer Center also offers patients and their families access to clinical trials; skin, wound, and ostomy care; rehabilitation services, palliative care, patient navigation, nutritional services, financial counseling, and psychosocial services.
Central Kentucky Cancer Care continues to emerge as a premier regional cancer service, underscored by accreditations, affiliations, and honors.
Commission on Cancer (CoC) accreditation is nationally recognized by many organizations, including the National Cancer Institute, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, National Quality Forum, American Cancer Society, and The Joint Commission, as having established data-driven performance measures for the provision of quality cancer care. CKCC has earned accreditation by meeting or exceeding numerous CoC standards annually that cover numerous aspects of patient-centered care, including cancer prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, genetic testing and counseling, supportive care, and survivorship.
As part of our continuing focus on making communities healthier, we are a proud partner of the UK Markey Cancer Center Affiliate Network, which provides our patients with enhanced access to high-quality cancer care. The Markey Affiliate Network assists doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other medical staff at local hospitals that provide excellent care in their communities. When patients need care that is not available locally, they can be referred to the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington. When that happens, Markey doctors work with CKCC doctors and oncologists to minimize travel for patients and their families.
