Clark Regional Medical Center Becomes One of the First Hospitals in the Nation to Perform Surgery with Newly Released Mako SmartRobotics™ for Spine
October 30, 2025
WINCHESTER, Ky. (October 30, 2025) - Clark Regional Medical Center has made national history as one of first hospitals in the United States to perform a procedure following the limited market release of the Mako SmartRobotics™ for Spine System — a transformative advancement in spinal surgery technology.
Mako Spine is designed to streamline workflows, simplify complex clinical tasks, and give surgeons greater control and confidence by combining Mako’s 3D CT-based planning with AccuStop™ haptic technology. This combination enables optimal implant placement and allows for a customized, intuitive approach that adapts to the patient’s unique anatomy.
“With Mako Spine, I can use a 3D CT scan to develop a personalized surgical plan before entering the operating room,” said Dr. James Rice, orthopedic spine surgeon at Clark Regional Medical Center. “During surgery, I’m able to confirm my plan and make adjustments in real time, while guiding the robotic arm to execute with precision. It’s exciting to offer our patients one of the most advanced spinal surgery technologies available — right here at home.”
Matt Smith, chief executive officer of Clark Regional Medical Center, says this milestone reinforces the hospital’s position as a leader in surgical innovation. “Being one of the first hospitals in the nation to perform surgery with the newly released Mako Spine System speaks volumes about the skill and commitment of our surgical team,” said Smith. “It’s part of our mission of making communities healthier® by ensuring patients in Central and Eastern Kentucky have access to the most advanced care available.”
Clark Regional Medical Center continues to invest in innovative tools, training and resources to deliver leading-edge surgical options and improved outcomes for patients across the region.
